The Fives

Five of Wands

Possible keywords: Challenge. Disagreement. Confusion.

When you draw the Five of Wands, you’re likely already well aware of the struggle that’s going on around you (or within you). The fiery nature of the Wands means opinions will differ, tempers will flare, and it’s all because everyone cares so much about the issue. There’s a lot of noise and drama, and you must wonder if any of it matters. Sometimes, people argue just for the sake of arguing.

Five of Cups

Possible keywords: Loss of perspective. Sadness. Stuck in grief.

I think of the Five of Cups as the “emo card.” It represents mourning a loss and feeling sorry for yourself. You can’t see the two cups that are still standing — it’s the three spilled cups that have your attention. We need to feel our feelings, but drawing this card may indicate that you’re becoming stuck in that cycle. Sadness that lingers can turn septic. There ARE two cups still standing, so perhaps it’s time to move on from the sadness and begin to rebuild, honouring the past as the foundation for future happiness. A change in perspective is called for.

Five of Swords

Possible keywords: Manipulation. Self-sabotage. Shame.

The Five of Swords has poisoned the self-care found in the Four and turned it into selfishness. Someone or something has been defeated, but how have we tripped ourselves up? This five also warns us about manipulation, gossip, and potential conflict of interest. Are we trying to control a situation, or are we the ones being controlled?

Five of Pentacles

Possible keywords: Struggle. Scarcity. Lack of energy.

The Five of Pentacles speaks of poverty — poverty in your wallet, heart, and soul. It’s feeling like you’re missing out; everyone else is having a blast, and you’re shut out in the cold. But ask yourself: Is that true? In certain seasons of our lives, feeling isolated can be genuine, but it can also be self-inflicted. This card is an acknowledgment of the lack and an invitation to reach out and ask for what you need. This five can also indicate we’re feeling run down. What can you do to take better care of your physical health?
